Read-Alouds: Ms. Allen read “How About Better Parents?” by Thomas Friedman and published by the New York Times.  The article was about how children need better parents to help with their education.  Children whose parents read to them in their early years were said to have scored higher on the Program for Internet Student Assessment test.  Amanda read an article called “Post-Divorce Parenting Mistakes and Strategies” by Dr. Phil.  I learned many things about things that parents shouldn’t do when they get a divorce.  Most of the time, the child thinks that it is their fault, and parents seem to let out their stress on the child.  When a child’s parents get divorced, their grades decline and it has a dramatic effect on them.  Jasmine read “Differing Views on Value of High School Tests” by Mary Pilon and published by the New York Times.  When I heard the title of the article, I assumed it would be about tests that students take on a certain subject, but it was actually about drug tests.  Schools were debating on whether all students or student athletes or any students at all should be tested for drugs.  Although I’m not an advocate for drugs, I do believe there is a certain respect that administration should have for the students.  Unless there is harm done to others or there is an unfair advantage thought to be because a student has taken drugs, students should not have to take a drug test.

  • Learning Experiences: We talked in class about many different things that we believe a good and bad teacher possess.  We discussed advantages and disadvantages of methodologies such as groups, questioning, lecture, technology, etc.  On Wednesday, we shared facts and questions about two chapters that we were assigned to read from a book written by David Elkind.  It was interesting learning all of the things that influenced change in society and change in teenagers.  I never knew how much we go through as teenagers and how difficult it can be for some teenagers.   On Friday, we learned about teachers in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and how they contrasted with each other and today.  Religion and modesty were emphasized in the late 1800’s more than in the early 1900’s, but today, religion and modesty in schools is far from what it used to be in earlier years.  My favorite part of the week was getting to watch a documentary called American Teen that showed the lives of students in Warsaw, Indiana in 2006.  They were in different social groups and it showed the ups and downs of high school.  Eventually, they all were getting accepted to colleges and they went off to start a new chapter in their lives and it made it more real for me that I will be going off to college soon as well!
  • Current Event: Teachers are now being victimized in schools and 25% of employees in medium-sized schools have reported being bullied or seeing another employee being bullied.  A teacher from Augusta, Maine told her story and proved that administrators do bully teachers. http://neatoday.org/2012/05/16/bullying-of-teachers-pervasive-in-many-schools/
  • Quote of the Week: “Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing what you can do.”-John Wooden;  I chose this quote because I thought it was inspirational.  Many students are torn down when they can’t do something and they let it effect them.  However, that doesn’t mean that they should give up and not try to do something else.  
  • Observations: In American Teen, I observed that high schools are the same in a way and that a lot of teenagers interact and act the same no matter how large or small their school is.  Clics may be smaller and there may not be as many, but they do exist.  The documentary proved that teenagers do things without thinking and don’t think about the repercussions of something they do.  I liked being about to see how other seniors acted and how their lives were.
  • Reflections: It is becoming more and more real now for me that I will be graduating in a little over a month!  We are getting closer to starting our internship which seemed so far away in the beginning, but now it is only three days away!  I’m somewhat nervous about my internship because I don’t know if the children will like me, but I have the knowledge I need to enable me to be a good intern.

3/31/13 Easter!

Read-Aloud: This week, Amanda was supposed to do her read-aloud, but we did’t have time for her to do it.  Therefore, there was not a read-aloud this week.

Learning Experiences: We went to three schools this week to do observations.  On Tuesday we went to Charleston Development Academy.  Wednesday and Thursday we went to Laing Middle School and Fort Johnson.  The first school we went to was very small and there was only one glass for each grade.  I enjoyed being able to connect with some of the students there because some of them needed personally advice which Jasmine and I were able to give.  At Laing Middle School we were all split up and I got to observe a math class and orchestra class!  The orchestra class was interesting and it was great being able to see a teacher who is so knowledgeable teach her students!  At Fort Johnson, we went to the career fair and observed which tables the children gravitated to.  The boys went to the more manly career tables like police officers and the girls went to the tables where there were pets.

Current Event: In Wheaton, Illinois,  at an evangelical college, homosexual students are experiencing a change in the attitudes that are expressed towards them.  Many homosexual Christians were coming out and many of the students didn’t know how to feel.

Quote of the Week: “When you know better you do better.” -Maya Angelou

I liked this quote because I feel that if you are more knowledgeable, you’ll be able to do better in everything you do.  This doesn’t just apply to education, it applies to everyday life!

Observations: I observed that despite stereotypes, children who go to school in the projects are just as smart as children who go to school in higher end areas.  Most people think that schools that are in lower end areas don’t get enough resources to be able to teach students well.  However, most of the students that we observed in the lower end area were intelligent even though they didn’t have as many resources available to them.

Reflections: It was cool seeing middle schools this week and I found it interesting that it seemed like high school!  I liked seeing the different schools because they all use different techniques.  I found out that all the schools use different techniques to accommodate the students and their needs.

3/24/13

Read-Aloud: Michelle had her read aloud this week and she read an article called “Boy ‘Driven to Suicide by Bullies” by James Tozer.  The article described how a young boy committed suicide because he was bullied at school.  It brought to light the severity of suicide because of bullying in America today.   

Learning Experiences: This week to started off with presenting our preschools to the class to finish off our preschool section.  We then moved to elementary schools and to show how elementary schools are, we went to Drayton Hall.  All of us went to different classrooms to see a variety of students.  I went to Ms. Wilson and Mrs. Blalock’s classroom to observe; Ms. Wilson taught 1st grade and Mrs. Blalock taught 4th grade.  The teachers try to incorporate iPads into their lessons to enable the children to learn in an easier in more fun way.  We also went to Stiles Point and Harborview Elementary schools to observe.  In Stiles Point, they were in a newer building and had specific colors to create a calm environment for the children.  I observed a second grade classroom, however, there wasn’t much to observe since they were testing.  Harborview Elementary was an older building and I observed a 5th grade classroom.  They were listening to a lesson on a science topic and the teacher interacted with the students well.  He chose students to read from the book, and showed visual explanations of what he was teaching about how light travels through the eye.  There was rows of desks and the students in each row had to check each others homework and see if they completed it.  I thought both schools were nice and had great teachers to teach the students!

Current Event: Some students in Smyrna Beach, Florida are now allowed and pushed to use their cell phones, lap tops, and other technology in the classroom to help them with their school work.  Once again, this is proving how our world is turning to technology.

I chose this quote because I feel that it explains the process of learning and what it can lead to!  Learning can create many opportunities for someone and having knowledge can help anyone be successful in life.

Observations: During each school visit that we have taken, I’ve observed that each school has different colors.  The principals take the time to tell us that they have the school a certain color because he creates a calm feeling.  Before the school visits, I didn’t think much of the colors of the school and how it. could effect the children academically and emotionally!

Reflections: I enjoyed seeing the schools this week and learning about elementary schools!   I still don’t believe that I would want to be a teacher, but it is great to have a back up plan just in case my original career plan doesn’t work out!  Learning how schools function is an eye-opening experience and as students, we don’t realize the hard work, organization, and politics involved in schools for them to be able to operate.  I have a new-found appreciation for teachers!

 

3/17/13 St. Patty’s Day!

Read-Aloud: On Wednesday, I read an article about how abuse effects the development of childrens’ brains; the article was published by Scholastic and written by two doctors.  I chose this article because I thought it was interesting how abuse could effect how a child’s brain develops.  I would use the article in a high school and even college classroom because of the large words and medical jargon.

Learning Experiences: During the week, we learned about preschools and how they work.  Our first school visit of the week was to Orange Grove Elementary to observe kindergarten classes and a preschool.  I found the preschool at Orange Grove to be more interesting because that is the age that I like most.  It was interesting to see the schedule of the 2-5 year olds and the 1 year olds and younger.  I didn’t like how small the space was for the amount of kids that were there however.  They needed a larger area to work and play in.  We also visited Charlestowne Montessori on Thursday which was an eye-opening experience.  Personally, I didn’t agree with many of their tactics and I wouldn’t send my child to a school like that.  I never knew what a Montessori school was, but visiting the school informed me a new tactic of learning that I had never known about.

Current Event: In New York City, there is a four-floor school building that has nine different schools within it.  The governor was shutting down many failing schools and they all seemed to come together in one place.  Scores and grades have improved compared to previous years as well.

I chose this quote because I though Gandhi’s quote was very inspirational.  I never looked at learning the way that he described.  I believe that he was implying that we should learn as much as possible as if we could live forever.

Observations: In the Montessori school, I observed how the children were learning.  The rooms were a neutral color and not very interesting.  When dealing with children who are young, a colorful, vibrant room helps makes the environment more of a welcoming space for the children to learn in.  Therefore, I feel that young children should be able to learn in a colorful environment with a structured, yet flexible curriculum where the children can learn what is necessary for them to function in society.

Reflections: The school visits this week were eye-opening experiences and they made my decisions for my future child concrete.  Seeing preschool classrooms enabled me to get an idea for my project and made me knowledgeable of how preschools function.  I learned that there are many different tactics in learning and everyone should look into the different types before they decide which is best for their children.

Blog 3/17/13

Read-Aloud: Jasmine read an article on teens and substance abuse by discovery channel which addressed the current issue about teens and the constant increase in the problem in America.  In today’s society, teens turn to drinking alcohol and using drugs to relieve the stress that they have.

Learning Experiences: On Monday, we watched Speak because it corresponds to lessons that we have presented and learned about.  The movie was a great example of a high school girl who was a victim of rape.  She did not have a voice to tell anyone what had happened to her and who raped her, but in the end, she was able to speak!  To prepare for our Math and Science night lessons, we worked on them Tuesday as well as our lesson plans.  Amanda and I did our lesson on a science topic; the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly.  Jasmine did her read aloud on Wednesday and we both presented our lessons and books on Thursday.  I did a lesson on abuse/neglect and showed the music video Concrete Angel by Martina McBride to show the rest of the class an example of abuse in a song.  Jasmine did her lesson on substance abuse specifically targeting alcohol and the common drugs used such as marijuana, heroin, and cocaine.During her lesson, she addressed how often teens abuse alcohol.  According to statistics, one third of high school students have binged on alcohol in the last month, meaning that they consumed more than four alcoholic drinks in one sitting.  Thursday evening was Math and Science night and all of us teacher cadets presented our lessons that pertained to Math and Science night and it went well!  Our audiences were attentive and participated in our interactive lessons!  Finally, on Friday, Amanda and Michelle presented their lessons.  Amanda did her lesson on bullying and I was informed that 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year.  There are often stories in the news about students committing suicide because they were bullied to the point that they felt that life was not worth living anymore.  The four types of bullying include physical, verbal, covert, and cyber bullying.  Michelle did her lesson on depression/suicide and the song that she shared with us was a great song that represented her topic well!


Current Event: Because of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting back in December of 2012, teachers in South Dakota are taking precautions they think are necessary.  Teachers are arming themselves to make sure if an incident did happen in their school, they would be prepared.

I love this quote by John Dewey because I believe that if teachers teach students things of the past we will not have the knowledge that will help guide us into our future.  Dwelling in the past will only pull us back instead of pushing us into the future.

Observations: While I was at the Sadie Hawkins dance, I experienced what I thought was a form of bullying.  Many girls went up to a boy at the dance and were trying to dance around him in a way that could have made him feel uncomfortable!  It was noticeable that he was uncomfortable while it was happening.  After learning about bullying, I tried to see if I noticed it more after learning about it.  Therefore, I observed that bullying is an issue in our school whether even if it is not as serious as other situations.

Reflections: I learned that abuse/neglect, depression/suicide, bullying, and substance abuse has become a large problem in America.  Also, having to create so many lessons has taught me a lesson that I need better time management!

Read Aloud: Amanda read, “Parents Struggle with Decision to Medicate Bipolar Kids” by Korina Lopez; USA Today was the publisher.  The article was from the point of view of many different mothers and they voiced their opinions on medicating their children who have bipolar disorder.  Many statistics were included in the article as well such as, two percent of children and teens are diagnosed, 5.7 million people have bipolar disorder and many are diagnosed before the age of 19 years old, and half of children fourteen and older with the disorder drop out of school.  I thought that these statistics were interesting because so many people are getting diagnosed with bipolar disorder and it is beginning to be more understood by those in the medical school.  It is not known for sure it is a hereditary disease, however one is four to six time more likely to develop the disorder if it runs in one’s family.  I thought that the article was interesting and informative.  The article could be used in a classroom to inform many students who do not know about bipolar disorder of the dangers of the disorder.  This article could be appropriate for late middle school and high schools students who would understand the medical terms that are throughout the article.

Learning Experiences: We went to the Early Childhood Development Center downtown near the College of Charleston, which is a preschool.  They are in such high demand that they have a waiting list with over 300 children on it.  College of Charleston students of workers get first priority at this preschool.  We learned that their preschool is different than other preschools in that they use different techniques with the children.  For instance, they encourage argument because it involved problem solving that the children can work on themselves.  We also got to observe the different age groups in observation booths which was interesting!  The youngest age group played together very well and were calm which is the opposite of how I would’ve thought that age would act.  We also watched a documentary called Dying to Be Thin.  The documentary was about eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia.  It was informative and we learned that eight million people have eating disorders; men as well as women.  Eating disorders are a large problem in America and the documentary targeted ballerinas and models specifically describing how they had to maintain a certain image and were criticized if they didn’t.  The rest of the week we did our last Lit. circle for the book Speak and we did more research for our lessons which are due next week.

Current Event: Northwoods Fine Arts Academy in Oklahoma believes in preparing children well before they go to kindergarten.  Putting children through preschool was even mentioned by President Obama in the state of the Union speech and he stated that early education is important in the greater development of a child.

I chose this quote by Aristotle because I believe it is really valid.  To many students, school is a waste of time and useless.  However, to me, education is important, but difficult.  Although education is bitter, the ending is sweet and can enable one to achieve their career goals.

Observations: When we went to the Early Childhood Development Center, we learned that they use different techniques with the children there.  When we were in the observation booth for the oldest group of children, they sat in a circle on the rug where they talked about crickets that a student brought in.  The teacher was attentive and gave all the students a chance to speak about what they saw.  Therefore, when there are many children, the teacher must give all the children a chance to speak so they don’t feel like they are being ignored.

Reflections: All in all, I learned many new things about eating disorders and about ECDC. It is interesting learning about people’s experiences  who have had eating disorders as well because it opens up your eyes to the many health problems that people may have and face everyday.  Being able to see ECDC was a great experience and I thought it was a great establishment and environment for children to learn and grow in.

Read Alouds: Ms. Allen read Animal School by Ellen Braun on Tuesday in class.  The barrier to learning for the animals was diversity because they were all different.  For instance, the duck worried about swimming, the bear was lazy, the zebra played hooky, the fish was bored, the eagle was a trouble-maker, etc.  The lesson that the reader could get out of the book is that everyone is different and learns and acts in their own way.  The age group that I would read Animal School to late elementary and middle school students because there are a few large words that younger children would not understand.  I like Braun’s book because it portrayed diversity in animals, which in turn can describe how human beings are diverse as well.

Learning Experiences: On Tuesday, Ms. Lewis, the Spanish teacher at CCSMS, came into our classroom to teach us about ELL students and how they may feel when they begin learning English.  To show us how it felt, she began speaking to us in Spanish very quickly. Having only taken Spanish for two years, I only understand a few simple words that were similar to English words.  Ms. Allen told us to answer three questions about our experience when Ms. Lewis was speaking to us only in Spanish.  I learned that being an ELL student could often be difficult because they learn at a slower pace that their peers.  At that moment, I couldn’t help but feel quite hopeless and stressed because I couldn’t understand; that is how an ELL student must feel!  I was also unaware that we’ve had a few ELL students at CCSMS and that being an ELL student is a barrier to learning.  Later in the week, Ms. Allen did a power point on Bipolar disorder.  Bipolar disorder is a medical condition in which a person feels extreme high and lows, also known as mania and depression.  Usually, this disorder is diagnosed in college-age people.  To go along with the power point, we watched a documentary about Evan Perry and his journey living with Bipolar disorder.  Evan experienced suicidal and depressive signs since he was very young.  For example, he would get frustrated if things weren’t perfect, he would be unmotivated, and had a flat tone of voice sometimes, and he mentioned death many time in song and to his teachers.  His parents tried many things to help Evan like, take him to doctors, give him medication, and show him love.  However, the moment they noticed that Evan was doing better, they took him after his medication at his request, but when things started getting worse again, they made an appointment to get him back on the medication.  Unfortunately, Evan committed suicide two days before his doctors appointment on October 2nd, 2005.  Although Evan had Bipolar disorder, he had friends.  When Evan would show signs of suicide, his friends joked about it and didn’t take it seriously.  The documentary was a great story of someone who had Bipolar disorder, but it was difficult to know that that is reality for some people.  Evan’s story is inspiring, whether he wanted it to be or not.  His story is a lesson to many people and enables those without Bipolar disorder to appreciate who they are.  We also had two Lit. circles this week where we discussed the book we are reading called Speak.  The book portrays the high school experience as one first enters high school and the many difficulties of fitting in when one has a reputation already.  Melinda struggles to find her place in Merryweather Highschool and we are learning that IT, Andy Evans, and her parents, play a large role in her silence.

Current Event: Physical education is now becoming a more mentally stimulating task rather than just a physical task.  Students are being told to do something while doing something else at the same time.  Multi-tasking is said to improve the children’s test scores in the long run.

I chose this quote by BB King because there are many things in life that can very easily be taken away, such as a boy from committing suicide, but education will always be there and can never be taken away.  Once you learn something it will always be in your mind, which will remain forever.

Observations: Since I work at a church sometimes watching children, I always have to remember that the way they are acting is normal for their age.  I always have to remember to be understanding and patient with children because they often misbehave.  Since children have a lot of energy I also have to remember that they need a lot of attention and need to be played with so they get everything they need .  

Reflections: This week I learned that ELL students are in our school and all throughout America at other schools.  They struggle with learning because learning a new language is difficult and English is said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn.  Bipolar disorder is a large problem in America and  many people suffer from it.  Through Evan Perry’s story, we learned a valuable lesson and it impacted all of us greatly.  Because of everything we have learned this week and will learn in future weeks to come, we will become more rounded people because of all the things we are learning!
